A calm winter's day at Gearing's Point in Hermanus delivered a special sighting as a Southern Right whale mother and her brindle-coloured calf cruised close to shore. The young calf stayed faithfully alongside its mother, occasionally surfacing in perfect unison as they moved through the sheltered bay. Against the backdrop of the rugged coastline, the pair offered onlookers a glimpse into one of nature's most remarkable annual events — the arrival of Hermanus's newest generation of whales.
