Southern right whales - 2023-06-10

The annual arrival of the Southern right whales stays a great event for me after 18 years in Hermanus

Some whales were spotted from boats but I've not seen any Southern right whales from te cliffs of Hermanus yet

There were reports that whales have been spotted from De Kelders across the bay from Hermanus

So, yesterday was another beautiful day in Hermanus and I decided to take the motorcycle and travel to De Kelders to see if we can spot something

We were duly rewarded, there were at least two Southern right whales quite far out

We could see they were moving towards land and spent some time waiting for them to come closer

And they gave a great performance in showing a tail, jumping and the distinctive blow

 After a very rewarding whale season, I thought that was it

But, today a mother and calf was very lazy in travelling from Grotto to Gearings Point

I followed them all the way and was duly rewarded

If this is the end, it was good enough

I thought I saw something with the whales and indeed, a Humpback dolphin was swimming past
